Sail painting – Day 2
On the second day of painting, Sam and I managed to complete one side of the sail. There were hurdles but more manageable this time.
The studio had been blacked out including the ceiling skylights for performances. This meant working under artificial light which is not ideal. The man advantage was that space was a lot cooler than during the previous session.
The painting ran smother after we had made most of the mistakes on worked out how the materials handled at the last session. Putting down plastic sheeting to protect the floor turned out to be a mistake though! Ink that had come through the sailcloth pooled on the plastic and dragged across the underneath of the sail, staining areas that were meant to remain white. Ink that went through on to the floor previously dried quickly but the plastic sheeting kept it wet.
We managed to rescue the situation and in spite of these problems, successfully completed one side of one sail. Due to the time it had taken to get to this stage, we had to consider how feasible it would be to do the other, smaller sail which was going to be in contrasting colours. In the end we decided to leave the smaller sail completely white. We thought it actually looked better that way too.
After finishing the day, I spent a bit of time by a big lavender bed outside Puppet Place watching 30 odd bees moving around the flower stems.
