Family friendly sail design workshops, a touring exhibition, a sail raising event and a prototype sail installed at Salthouse Fields in Clevedon

As part of Phase One, a series of  hands-on workshops was run by local artist, Sam Francis. Sam will create a design for the sail based on the ideas that come out of these workshops.

On the day that the sail is installed there will be sail raising event and picnic at Salthouse Fields in Clevedon for everyone who has been involved. The sail will then remain up throughout September. An exhibition touring North Somerset libraries will run in conjunction with the sail installation

Weston-super-Mare Library

Saturday 20 July 2024, 2 – 4pm

A hands-on workshop run by Sam Francis for people of all ages. This will be a making and doing session bringing together ideas and inspiration that will lead to the design for the prototype sail installed at Salthouse Fields in Clevedon.

Yatton

Clevedon

Sail raising event

Once the mast is installed, there will be a sail raising event where the sail is hoisted up the mast and unfurled to reveal the final design and catch the wind for the first time. Everyone involved in the workshops and other aspects of the project will be invited to join the event, share a picnic, some music and time together in the park.

The prototype sail will be on display in the seafront park at Salthouse Fields in Clevedon. (Dates TBC). At up to 12m tall, this colourful animated sculpture will have a real presence in the park, turning in the wind, responding to the ever changing weather. An interpretation sign near the sail will also tell visitors about the Flotilla project and the ideas behind it.

Exhibtions

While the sail is up at Salthouse Fields, a series of small exhibitions will run at Weston-super-Mare, Clevedon, Yatton and Nailsea libraries. Exhibition boards will tell the Flotilla story, talk about the issues and themes it raises and allow people to feed back on the project through a simple postcard survey.
